The Perfect Classroom Pet: The Crested Gecko

Look no further than the crested gecko — a quirky, wide-eyed reptile that’s friendly and good with kids!
Three years ago, I had a student whose family was going through a divorce. They needed to find a new home for their crested gecko. Initially, I was hesitant, but I agreed to take it in, mainly so he could still spend time with his favorite pet.
Spikey ended up becoming one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
What is a crested gecko?
Crested geckos are small, friendly lizards with big eyes and even bigger personalities!
They’re easy to care for, gentle, and super fun to watch. With their sticky feet, climbing skills, and cute little faces, they’re perfect for classrooms and curious kids alike!
Crested geckos come from a group of tropical islands in the South Pacific. They get their name from the soft “crests” that run from their eyes down the sides of their heads — they look just like tiny eyelashes!
Fun fact: People thought crested geckos were extinct until 1994, when scientists found them happily living in the rainforest.
Why crested geckos are the perfect classroom pet
- Low Maintenance Unlike many reptiles, crested geckos don’t require special UV lamps or temperature settings. In most indoor classrooms, room temperature is perfect. Their diet is also easy to manage — we feed him a powder mixed with water and the occasional treat of small crickets.
- Small Space Crested geckos are relatively small (8-10 inches) and thrive in vertical enclosures, which mimic their natural tree-dwelling habitat. A 20-gallon tall terrarium is plenty of space and fits easily on a classroom counter or bookshelf.
- Quiet and Odor-Free These reptiles are virtually silent and don’t produce any noticeable smell — a huge plus when compared to hamsters, guinea pigs, or birds.
- Calm and friendly Crested geckos have a calm, friendly personality. They can be handled gently by students and seem to enjoy it!
- Weekends – Our crested gecko does well at school over the weekend – no need to bring him home.
- Inexpensive – The Pets in the Classroom Grant is a great way to get started!
Benefits of a crested gecko in the classroom
A classroom pet isn’t just a cute addition — it’s an educational tool. Crested geckos offer valuable learning opportunities across subjects:
- Responsibility: Students can take turns feeding, misting, and checking the enclosure. They love taking him home over long weekends and breaks!
- Biology: Learn about reptiles, ecosystems, and animal adaptations. The kids especially love to observe him when he molts!
- Observation: Watch the gecko climb, hunt, and interact with its environment.
- Empathy: Caring for a living creature encourages kindness and awareness.
Basic care for a crested gecko
Crested geckos are easy classroom pets to care for.
- Habitat: Use a tall terrarium with branches and plants (real or artificial). Maintain humidity by misting habitat 1-2 times daily – this is a great classroom job!
- Food: We feed our gecko diet 3–4 times a week with a powered food mix. Sometimes he gets a small cricket as a treat.
- Handling: Have students wash their hands before and after handling the gecko to minimize spread of Salmonella.
- Cleaning: Remove waste weekly. I give students a plastic spoon to scoop the waste.
In our classroom, students take turns caring for Spikey in two-week rotations. I have a morning rotation that takes care of basic feeding and care and an afternoon rotation that mists his enclosure!
Crested geckos are one of those pets you don’t expect to fall in love with — until you do. These tiny lizards, with their big curious eyes and funny little “eyelashes,” totally stole my heart.
