I remember way back in sixth grade when my math teacher assigned us one hundred metric problems for homework.

That night, I sat at our kitchen table for what seemed like hours with a worksheet soggy with tears.

Learning and practicing the metric system is important, but I firmly believe it can still be fun and engaging for students.

How to Teach Metric Conversions in 3 Easy Steps!

The key to teaching students how to convert metric units is to break it down into three steps.

How many meters are in 30 mm?

Identify the starting and ending units

Count the number of “jumps” from the starting to ending unit.   Decide the direction you are moving.

Move the decimal the same number of “jumps” in the same direction.  Add zeros as needed.
