Drops on a Penny Lab Scientific Method Capillary Action Lab

Description

Looking for a fun, editable lab for the scientific method or properties of water? Investigate the surface tension of water and the property of cohesion with this Drops on a Penny Lab.

Students will investigate how the different variables affect the number of water drops on a penny. As students complete this activity, they will make predictions and sketch their observations. They will have the opportunity to fill out an experimental design diagram, collect and graph data, and complete a graphic organizer to write a CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) formatted conclusion.

This product provides opportunities for differentiation for learners of different abilities. Three versions allow for differentiation and scaffolding. The final option is for students to design their own experiment. For example, students may want to investigate to see if different liquids affect the number of drops on a penny.

A digital Google version is also included.

This lab is easy to set up but highly engaging. The basic materials needed are a penny, water, and an eyedropper.
